How the calculator works We multiply the number of miles you’ve traveled by the amount of CO2 your mode of transportation makes per mile. For a mid-sized car that averages 25mpg, for example, every mile on the road creates 0.78 lbs (0.000355 metric tons) of CO2 in the atmosphere. Because airplanes contribute most of their CO2 on takeoffs, shorter flights produce an average of more CO2 per mile flown. That’s why you choose between short hops, cross country trips and long hauls on our calculator.
The cost of your credit When you buy one Neutralizing or Regeneration Credit from The Local Trust, we pledge to take at least one ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere for you. The price includes the cost of the trees we plant, the solar panels we install and the administrative activities that keep us going. Only 10 percent of your charge goes to administrative fees – 90 percent goes to the project you choose.
